Understanding Time Zones

Essential concepts for global time management.

What Are Time Zones?

Earth is divided into 24 time zones, each roughly 15° of longitude wide, starting from the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) at Greenwich, UK. As Earth rotates, different parts experience day and night at different times.

GMT vs UTC

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is a time zone, while UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is a time standard. They are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, but UTC is more precise and does not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

DST is the practice of moving clocks forward 1 hour in spring and back in fall to make better use of natural daylight. It is commonly observed in North America and Europe, but less common in Asia and Africa.

AM/PM vs 24-Hour Time

AM (ante meridiem) means before noon, PM (post meridiem) means after noon. The 24-hour format avoids confusion (e.g., 13:00 is 1:00 PM) and is standard in military, aviation, and many countries worldwide.
